2019 Recipient - Mary Ellen Gucciardi
Mary Ellen Gucciardi is an accomplished educator with a passion for Canada’s North. Gucciardi is dedicated to experiential learning and to increasing understanding of the High Arctic between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth. A cultural facilitator, Mary Ellen is an explorer, diver, mentor, author, documentary film maker and curriculum leader. She has been instrumental in shaping and delivering the Sedna Epic Expedition’s ocean knowledge mobilization program for Inuit youth, with a particular focus on inspiring and empowering Inuit girls and young women. Her expertise in Inuit culture has proved invaluable in Sedna’s broader outreach to schools in Greenland, the USA and Mexico.
Mary Ellen has created an eBook on journeys of exploration and discovery and produced two films, On the Land and Iqaluit Dawn, which follow her fellow teachers and students as they participate in North-South cultural exchanges to Nunavut that she led.
A secondary school teacher with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (Ontario), Mary Ellen Gucciardi has brought Canada’s geography to life through her innovative learning opportunities for students and teachers.
