About The Royal Canadian Geographical Society

College of Fellows Dinner 2013

Geography was on the map in Gatineau, Que., for The Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s annual College of Fellows dinner. More than 400 explorers, educators and geography enthusiasts turned out to the Canadian Museum of Civilization for the Nov. 13 event — a showcase of the minds that work to make Canada better known to Canadians and the world.

Among the attendees were Governor General David Johnston, patron of the RCGS, who presented the Society’s 2013 awards; Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen Harper, who accepted Honourary Fellowships from John Geiger, the Society’s chief executive officer; storm chaser and host of Angry Planet George Kourounis, who MCed the evening; and wildlife painter Robert Bateman, who gave the keynote address. All stressed one point in common: the importance of a sense of place — of knowing and loving Canada’s geography, history and people.
